Hyperthermia Cancer Therapy

It is proven that heat can kill cancer cells and damage the blood vessels inside of tumours. Hyperthermia treatment uses high temperatures to treat such areas. The damage to cells during hyperthermia can make them more sensitive to the effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy so these treatments work better, according to Canadian Cancer Society.

Loco-regional hyperthermia (LRHT) generates heat within a localized area of the body, such as a tumour with radio frequencies. These frequencies generate deep tumour heating to fever temperatures and cannot be achieved with radiant heat or infrared saunas. Loco-regional hyperthermia has a goal temperature of 41°C to 45°C that is sustained for approximately one hour overtop/around the affected area. Most of the body remains at the average core temperature with just the tumour increasing in temperature.

Whole-body hyperthermia (WBHT) generates heat throughout the body and attempts to reach a temperature balance – between 38.5°C to 40.5°C – through vasodilation, or an increase in the size of blood vessels.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What will I feel during the hyperthermia treatment?

Sometimes patients feel warmth from the probe during the session. Most of the time, little is felt due to the cool bladder that is under the probe protecting the skin. Sometimes there is heat felt on the skin and the probe is adjusted.

How do I prepare for my treatment?

It is recommended that patients have a meal, without much water/liquid, before treatment. Wear comfortable loose clothing without metal. All metal and jewelry should be removed including necklaces, rings, earrings and belts. Gowns can be used in the Oncotherm room during treatments. After treatment, patients are capable of driving and carrying on about their day.

What might I experience after the treatment?

It is common for patients to feel a subtle deep warmth after treatment.

Will this eliminate cancer in my body?

Various studies from hospitals in Germany show a benefit for virtually every cancer to different degrees. Because each patient’s condition is different, it cannot be guaranteed this treatment is a cure for everybody’s cancer. Get more information on alternative cancer treatments in Canada.
