Artemisinin is a chemical compound extracted from the wormwood plant, Artemisia annua L.
Wormwood has a unique mechanism to selectively kill cancer cells while leaving normal cells intact. It does so by destroying cells that are abnormally high in iron and causing free radical destruction of their cell membranes. Normal cells of the body do not store iron in such high concentrations but cancer cells and parasites do.
Wormwood has been used for centuries as an effective treatment for malaria, caused by a parasite. Researchers at N.C.I.’s (National Cancer Institute) Developmental Therapeutic Program realized that artemisinin may also be effective for not only destroying parasites but also cancer cells which also store iron in high concentrations.
In order for cancer cells to rapidly divide they need to store iron. On their cell surface they have a transfer mechanism to deliver the needed iron from the blood into the cancer cell. Cancer cells have an abnormal number of these receptors for iron and the aggressiveness of the tumour is indicated by the number of these iron receptors. Artemisinin carries a endoperoxide moiety that forms powerful free radicals in the presence of high iron destroying cancer cell membranes. Delivering artemisinin to the cancer cell causes cancer cell death. I will warn my patients of cancer cell die off symptoms including nausea, chills and fatigue following treatment.
Researchers at N.C.I. found artemisinin to have anti-cancer activity against 55 cancer cell lines. Most notably Artemisinin has shown to be effective for leukemia, colon, lung and breast cancer (including radiation resistant breast cancer). Artemisinin also was effective against cancers that were traditionally resistant to chemotherapy. Other cancers that it was found effective for treating include melanoma, ovarian, prostate, renal and central nervous system cancers such as glioblastoma and neuroblastoma. An earlier study with human leukemia cells demonstrated 100% cancer cell destruction in half the time (8 hours) as the breast cancer cells, probably due to the rapid cell division and higher iron concentration of leukemia cells.
Artemisinin is delivered daily through IV infusion.
